One of the main concerns is the environmental impact of SpaceX's rocket launches. In 2024, the Environmental Protection Agency found that SpaceX violated the Clean Water Act by discharging industrial wastewater into the surrounding area. Activists like Bekah Hinojosa, co-founder of the South Texas Environmental Justice Network, fear that the expansion will exacerbate environmental issues, citing debris and metal shrapnel from previous launches. Hinojosa's organization is exploring legal action to prevent the annexation, labeling it as the 'SpaceX annexation' that threatens the Rio Grande Valley.
Local landowners, such as 83-year-old Gerold Podraza, oppose the annexation, believing it empowers the wealthy to influence politicians and make decisions detrimental to the community. Barbara Buckner, a 56-year-old resident, shares similar concerns, questioning the city's commitment to its residents given the involvement of SpaceX employees in local governance. The current mayor and one of the city commissioners work for SpaceX, raising questions about potential conflicts of interest.
Despite the opposition, Sofia Benavides, a Cameron County Commissioner, asserts that the law allows Starbase to expand, and there are no legal means to stop it. The city has until August 18 to gather feedback from impacted landowners and hold public hearings before voting on the annexation in September.
